Here at Aviva Stadium, it’s no secret that we’re big on sustainability. But what does that trendy “green” buzzword really mean for the events industry?
At Aviva Stadium Events, we interpret sustainability to mean maximising our positive economic, environmental, and social impacts -- and minimising our negative impacts -- when operating our stadium. We have put this idea of event sustainability to action with various initiatives over the past years, from sourcing more of our supplies and materials locally, to giving back to the local community through our community fund.
While we’re very proud of our work toward becoming a more sustainable stadium, we know that there is still more to be done in 2022 and beyond. That’s why we are excited to announce our latest environmentally-friendly initiative: phasing out single-use plastics.

Single-use plastics are items that are used only once before being thrown away or recycled, such as disposable coffee cups and plastic water bottles, and for decades they have been a staple in the event industry. However, a recent UN report found that 79% of the plastic waste ever produced is now either sitting in landfills or has been introduced to our oceans, waterways and environment. Because these plastics aren’t biodegradable, they can have devastating effects on our ecosystems and the wildlife that comes in contact with them.
Upsetting estimates from the Ocean Conservancy show that plastic impacts nearly 700 species in our oceans, often causing life-threatening problems to animals such as seabirds and sea turtles.
What’s more, microplastics ingested by fish can enter our food chain, posing a threat to human health, as well. And with 800 million tons of plastic waste entering the ocean every year, it’s clear to see that something needs to change.
By phasing out our use of single-use plastics at Aviva Stadium’s events, we are doing our part to reduce the environmental and social impact of plastic waste. Additionally, we encourage all of our attendees and customers to take their own small steps, such as using reusable water bottles and recycling whenever possible. Together, we hope to make the events industry as sustainable as possible in the coming years.
